CMU is seeking a Sr. Director, Media Relations to support the vision of the Vice President of Marketing & Communications, the AVP for Content & Communications and university leadership in raising the visibility of Carnegie Mellon University nationally and globally. As one of the most important leadership positions in the division, you will lead external media outreach and issues management efforts the university through strategic planning and innovation. This entails coordinating press pitches, creating dynamic content and visuals as well as monitoring trends throughout the industry. While raising standards and developing talent, you will be an effective partner for external visibility efforts across and beyond the division, facilitating collaboration among communications professionals in the colleges/schools and those leading university-wide initiatives. Through innovation and creativity, you will develop best practices and media relations strategies that align with the university's strategic goals and those set forth by the university-wide marketing and communications plan.
Among the priorities within this portfolio, you will develop and execute an aggressive strategy for building visibility for CMU through outreach to national and international news media. You will work with campus and regional partners to take advantage of national interest in the Pittsburgh story. With strategic counsel and direction by the VP and the AVP, you will serve as a senior counselor to the president and other senior leaders in managing issues that carry reputational risk and opportunity for the university.You will also work in tandem with government relations, corporate and foundation relations to ensure coordinated outreach and messaging.
Primary responsibilities include:
Overseeing media relations for the university, including the development of key messages, materials, and key relationships, ensuring that outreach to news media locally, nationally, and globally is coordinated with broader university communications strategies and initiatives;
Identifying issues developing both internally and externally to the University community that have the potential to generate public interest and affect the University's external reputation, and recommend and implement communications strategies for anticipating and responding to issues;
Leading the development and execution of a university-wide, proactive media relations strategy as part of the marketing and communications plan;
Through shared efforts and collaboration, generating news coverage for set strategic focus areas, including the development of news packages and the cultivation of targeted, news outlets and reporters;
Providing public relations counsel and direction to senior leadership, key faculty experts and campus communicators; foster best practices, including media training, across campus;
Developing an innovative and collaborative team environment that embraces the need for dynamic storytelling and news style turnaround time for deadlines
Serving as a key liaison to the college/school media relations professionals around creating, designing, and implementing an integrated communication plan, coordinating media planning and outreach; improve work processes in various planning, staff and department meetings.
Managing the strategies for issues and crisis communications; partnering with executive communications and other campus units.
Developing an issues management protocol and lead the fact-finding, resolution and communications with senior leadership;
When appropriate, acting as university spokesperson, partnering with central administration to ensure consistency in messaging with the media and other internal and public audiences;
Developing strategic partnerships with key university leaders and faculty members; identify CMU thought leaders as resources to national and global media; analyze possible topics and issues to be communicated to target audiences in order to meet communications objectives;
Coordinating closely with multimedia and social media content as an important component of news stories and packages. Ensure news-related content is appropriately reflected and integrated across all digital channels;
As part of the presidential platform, working closely with the AVP on the development and execution of the external outreach and media strategy.
Working with Metrics Coordinator to develop and execute effective measurement of editorial activities, and help promote successes across university
Skills and Qualifications:
Strong writing skills with the judgement to know what types of writing and multimedia components are needed to ensure the story reaches its full media potential.
Ability to interpret complex research materials into digestible language for public consumption.
Strong presentation and leadership skills needed to moderate media panels and other gatherings.
Bachelor's degree; Marketing, Communication, Journalism, or relevant applicable
10 – 15 years of experience in media relations, communications, or marketing required
Progressive leadership experience and public speaking experience
On-air presentations experience, video shooting and editing as well as photography skills.
