The Promise Neighborhood program is a U.S. Department of Education initiative focused on breaking the cycle of inter-generational poverty by significantly improving the educational and developmental outcomes and overall life prospects of children and youth in our most distressed communities. The core idea behind the initiative is that providing both effective schools and strong systems of support to children, youth and their families in poverty and thus meeting their health, social services, and educational needs will offer them the best hope for a better life. The University of Maryland School of Social Work is the lead agency for the Promise Heights Promise Neighborhood and is charged with working with community-based organizations, schools, faith-based institutions and others to build a pipeline of wraparound services for students to ensure pathways outs of poverty for youth and their families.
Promise Heights is currently recruiting for a Marketing Specialist . Under the supervision of the Promise Heights Executive Director, this position will provide strategic marketing, communication, and public relations expertise and guidance to the initiative. This position will be responsible for communicating and promoting the mission and vision of Promise Heights, both internally and externally. External stakeholders include local and national media, funders, local and state legislators, and community residents. The position will be responsible for creating, distributing, and maintaining print, and digital communications; generating related content for the website; maintaining ongoing media outreach; developing annual progress reports; and promoting the brand and reputation of Promise Heights.

Researches, writes, edits, and summarizes public information materials. Distributes information materials to print, broadcast, and on-line media outlets.
Spots trends in the media to keep abreast of current issues and opportunities to place university members as experts and ensure stories are being directed to the most appropriate outlets.
Manages standard public relations situations, such as writing and editing for Promise Heights including reports, key messaging, success stories, marketing materials, web content, e-blasts, and range of fundraising materials.
Supports special event management through promoting press releases, speaker and media coordination and post-event recaps.
Oversees creation and distribution of communication and development materials including writing, design, photographs, and video. Materials for use by staff and leadership.
Develops relationships and maintains contact with program staff.
Organizes and maintains database files on assigned materials. Builds and maintains a robust repository of photography and videos to document program implementation.
Provides editorial and design support for visually appealing presentations, publications, and other program technical documents.
Crafts thoughtful and compelling messages that communicate program goals and accomplishments both to the public and internal staff.
Plans and coordinates public relations and marketing activities to increase visibility of program leadership.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education : Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field.
Experience : Two (2) years of experience in marketing, public relations, communications, or media, public or client relations.
