The Information and Technology Services (ITS) organization is seeking a motivated, senior-level communicator to join its Marketing Communications team. The successful candidate will closely collaborate with ITS teams, university communication professionals and subject matter experts to provide communications leadership for multiple highly-visible and complex projects and initiatives that support the university’s core missions.
The Communications Specialist will support the communications and marketing needs of our research-focused services, including Advanced Research Computing - Technology Services, as well as other ITS projects and services. This position includes advising on strategic direction and developing and leading communication approaches and detailed plans, while adhering to U-M and organizational formats, style, language and branding standards. This role requires someone who can translate complex concepts into compelling stories, proactively anticipate and resolve problems, work under minimal supervision and has the passion to meet or exceed customer expectations. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Communications.

ITS Communications team provides strategic communication planning and comprehensive services for the departments of ITS and for special initiatives sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (VPIT-CIO). The key responsibilities of this position would include, but are not limited to, the following:
STRATEGIC PROJECT COMMUNICATIONS and PRODUCTION SUPPORT (85%)
Utilize strategic thinking to lead multiple highly-visible and complex marketing and communications projects and initiatives in support of ITS and the Office of the VPIT-CIO; develop and analyze high-level marketing communication strategies and detailed tactical plans that meet deadlines, budget, and customer expectations; collaborate closely with leadership, project/work teams and others to ensure the development and execution of plans that meet and align to the objectives of the organization
Consult with ITS leadership and campus partners to support the creation of the holistic "story" of research computing services provided by ITS and the Office of the VPIT-CIO including vision, strategy, and outcomes
Develop original work product, write and edit online and print material, e.g., email, websites, social media, newsletters, press releases and presentations ensuring all materials correctly convey organizational message, image and adheres to ITS and U-M brand and style guidelines; develop and coordinate timely communications for events such as workshops, trade shows and presentations; responsible for securing quotes, creating estimates, obtaining approvals and successfully meeting deadlines and budget restraints; coordinates with U-M news outlets to leverage internal and external media opportunities
Successfully prioritize conflicting priorities to plan and accomplish assignments; manage assignments that require research, translating complex subjects into information that is relevant to the audiences utilizing, originality, ingenuity, assessment of unusual circumstances and variation in approaches
Proactively anticipate and resolve problems and create conditions and processes to support change; comprehend and distill issues, identify problem factors, determine appropriate information, check assumptions against facts and generate solutions
Research and stay abreast of trends in PR/marketing/communications practices and methodologies and apply as audiences deem appropriate; evaluate and learn new tools to support organizational communication needs
Contribute, participate and share information and ideas with team; develop and maintain positive and cooperative relationships, inside and outside of work group, interacting in a friendly, open and honest manner
SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS 10%
Collaborates with team members, evaluates feedback on communications and recommends process and content improvements. Researches best practices; evaluate and learn new tools to support marketing communication needs. Demonstrates quality service by advocating for customer and quality improvement needs, resulting in meeting or exceeding customer satisfaction metrics.
Utilizes analytical and communication skills in the development and modification of written email, newsletters, brochures, presentations, web content and print collateral, resulting in content tailored to the level and type of audience for support and issue resolution.
Identifies areas of improvements based on requests and feedback from peers, customers and university partners.
DEVELOPMENT OF SELF AND OTHERS (5%)
Stays current with relevant advances in technologies. Responsible for maintaining and updating knowledge of IT policies and procedures, hardware, software and technical services. This can include: on-the-job training, attending technical courses or conferences, reading, research and testing. Develops and follows best practices and procedures and shares knowledge with team members.
Demonstrates skill development by actively participating in growth opportunities for continuous development and improvement and applying new skills/knowledge to the job as evident by the ability to efficiently and effectively perform assigned duties, resulting in meeting or exceeding customer expectations and performance metrics.
