The Director of Marketing and Business Development leads the marketing (B2C and B2B) and business development (sales) strategy and execution for the Professional Education (PPE) department at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). HGSE helps to advance the professional practices of over 15,000 teachers, school leaders, higher education administrators, early childhood leaders, and system-level leaders from more than 100 countries annually. This role conceives and executes the strategic design and implementation of the overall organizational structure and operating strategies for PPE marketing, communication, and business development. Provides expertise, insight, and leadership to promote HGSE Professional Education and drive enrollment and thereby the impact on the practice of educators across the education sector.
As a strategic thinker with proven experience leading marketing and business development units, and direct experience using Salesforce and related tools, will work to streamline the practices, systems, and processes PPE utilizes as the organization scales to generate strategic client relationships and growing enrollment, increasing personalization and marketing automation. Responsible for designing and leading marketing efforts to increase brand awareness and presence, and meet ambitious enrollment goals, in alignment with the mission and the impact model of HGSE. Conceptualizes strategy to understand and position programs as responsive to the needs of our audiences, and to reach new and relevant audiences for a portfolio of over 90 programs across the Early Childhood, K-12, Higher Education, and other related education-sector markets. This position reports to the Managing Director of Professional Education.
Responsibilities Strategic Planning & Execution ● Develops and executes a comprehensive marketing and business development strategy to build internal/cross-school and external field-based relationships and reach enrollment goals for all PPE programs, across all modalities (on-campus, online, custom, and hybrid programs) and for relevant domestic and global markets ● In collaboration with faculty, senior leadership, and program directors, and other key stakeholder at HGSE, develops the overall messaging and narrative through which PPE conveys its impact model, whom we serve, and the value of professional learning at HGSE ● Principal content and digital strategist for all PPE webpages, leading content production through web design, digital optimization, and social marketing campaigns. ● Collaborate with marketing staff to develop overall strategy and identify appropriate assets that support the overall organizational goals, focusing on creating a positive and consistent user experience (UX) ● Stay current on trends in digital advertising, UX/UI/CX, inbound marketing, marketing automation, digital media and content strategy to help position HGSE PPE as a leader in the space ● Direct and collaborate with multiple functional groups on digital advertising, brand/program marketing, creative services, social and email operations to ensure we are leveraging digital content to drive the most impact for business. ● Guide marketing team to develop integrated digital strategies and multichannel dissemination plans
Marketing ● In coordination with HGSE's office of Communications and Marketing, supports the digital, print, audio-visual, event, content, social-media, website and story-based marketing activities as part of a multi-channel, integrated marketing plan executed primarily through Salesforce ● Oversees the activities of the Marketing and Communication staff who work to implement the marketing and communication strategy and operations ● Sets and manages the overall annual marketing budget based upon the strategy, channels, and ongoing ROI analysis ● Strategizes and implements digital agency relationships across all media channels to engage markets, pursue best practices, and benchmark against industry trends. ● Develops' sound social and SEO strategy that can be monitored, measured, and optimized according to industry best practices ● Analyze the performance of social and SEO campaigns by identifying strategic opportunities and optimizing content to reach organizational goals ● Develops and delivers periodic quantitative and qualitative reports on optimization of the marketing funnel, campaign results, and return on investment for media, social, content and digital marketing campaigns ● Advances the use of Salesforce and Marketing Cloud, leveraging best practices in higher-ed marketing automation. Implements event and trigger-based communications and works to establish funnel-based metrics within the CRM and automation tools
Business Development ● Will design, build, and manage a business development/sales function, to achieve ambitious large-scale enrollment through B2B relationships that enroll large groups, establish multi-year relationships, and steward continuity in major client relationships. ● Sets and manages sales goals, with respect to both scope, focus, and scale of activities and measures ROI from relationship-building activities. ● Works to deepen and extend PPE's reach and impact through relationships with external constituents ● Leverages relationships with HGSE alumni and PPE past participants to generate word of mouth and awareness of program offerings and impactful outcomes.
Leadership and Management ● Build and retain a diverse team, providing exceptional leadership and effective supervision of the team ● Model inclusive leadership in team meetings, hiring and promotion actions, performance management, opportunities for growth, and mentorship ● Through the supervision of team members, oversee the carrying out of all administrative and operational activities related to PPE Marketing and Business Development ● Serve as a resource to all direct reports, stepping in as needed to provide additional support and/or coverage ● Serves as a member of PPE's senior leadership team representing PPE's marketing and business development strategy and goals. ● Serves as liaison with HGSE Marketing & Communications group, HGSE Partnerships, and University leaders on behalf of PPE. ● Oversees the activities of and directly supervises 2-3 direct reports managing and coordinating marketing and business development activities.
