The Marketing and Communications Manageris responsible for implementing marketing plans meant to promote the AAPD and its products, services, and events to members. This includes writing marketing copy, analyzing marketing and promotional needs, and collecting data measuring the viability of new products and services. The Marketing and Communications Manager is also responsible for managing media relations, including liaison and planning with the AAPD’s outside media relations firm, development of responses to inquiries from the media and the general public, and publicizing AAPD media successes to dental and other health professional organizations. The Marketing and Communications Manager advises the CEO on media issues, and recommends programs and activities designed to improve dissemination and acceptance of key AAPD messages.
Develops and implements timely and effective member marketing campaigns/plans promoting AAPD education, products, services and events, and other initiatives as assigned. Maintains comprehensive calendar for such plans.
Develops and implements multi-media member marketing which includes writing content, copywriting/editing, proofing, and video development, working closely with publications and website/social media staff.
Writes marketing copy for bi-monthly membership magazine Pediatric Dentistry Today (PDT), including periodic feature stories promoting AAPD products, services and events. Assists in proofing process for PDT.
4. Collects and analyzes data on the performance of marketing campaigns, tracking effectiveness and return on investment while making recommendations for improvements and new marketing related technologies.
5. Writes marketing copy for AAPD website.
6. Works closely with the Meetings department to create marketing plan and content for all AAPD CE activities, including the Annual Session.
7. Promotes awareness of AAPD endorsed/affinity programs for members.
8. Assists the Vice President for Development and Charitable Programs and the Senior Meetings, Exhibits, and Sponsorship Manager in developing appropriate publicity regarding AAPD and AAPD Foundation corporate partners and sponsors.
Plans and implements the AAPD’s public relations plan, including preparation and management of budget.
Oversees and coordinates liaison and relationship with AAPD’s designated outside public relations firm (currently Weber Shandwick).
3. Plans and manages print and broadcast media placement programs, such as media tours, press releases, press conferences, background statements, tip sheets, and responses to questions from media, in collaboration with AAPD’s outside public relations firm.
Plans and administers AAPD media spokesperson training program in collaboration with Director of Research and Policy Center, including selection of vendors to provide training, coordination of training programs, and managing of spokesperson placement.
Prepares regular “Media Mix” updates for PDT, AAPD E-News, the website, and CEO’s reports.
Maintains public relations content on AAPD professional and consumer websites and social media platforms, working closing with Web and Social Media Manager.
Works with CEO to develop media issue priorities and review materials prepared for media campaigns, and advises CEO on programs and activities designed to improve AAPD media relations.
Cultivates and maintains excellent working relationships with national and consumer media representatives.
Monitors and evaluates professional and consumer media activity (via Google search protocol) regarding the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry.
Assists in response to any media requests of the AAPD, in consultation with the CEO, and engages the President or other officers or AAPD spokespersons in such responses.
Establishes and maintains excellent relationships with trade/dental-related media outlets.
Establishes and maintains liaison on PR issues with the ADA Division of Communications, other dental specialty organizations, and AAPD-recognized district and state chapters.
In coordination with the CEO and Chief Policy Officer, reviews Pediatric Dentistry and Journal of Dentistry for Children articles in advance of publication for possible press releases.
Stays well-informed concerning AAPD Vision and Mission Statements, Constitution and Bylaws, Strategic Plan, oral health policies, best practices, and clinical guidelines in an effort to promote accurate and timely communication of AAPD positions to the public and other health professionals.
Bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of three years of experience in marketing, communications, association management, membership and customer relations, and writing. Strong knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods to include print, web/digital, and social media. Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Team player, able to work collaboratively and productively across departments. Proficiency with MS Office Suite software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
