The Office of Marketing and Communications' mission is to help the institution grow and prosper by increasing public awareness and preference for Portland State University.
The Director of Marketing is responsible for the development and implementation of integrated marketing plans that support the University's strategic goals, enhance its brand image, and inspire enrollment, engagement and investment in the University. The position also manages Portland State's trademark licensing program, campus events, social media, top-level web content and menu, digital marketing, content strategy and collaborates with departments to build brand equity through integrated marketing communications.
The Director of Marketing reports to the Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications in the Office of University Communications and supervises three staff members and several student employees. This is a full time (1.0 FTE) renewable 12-month appointment.
Bachelor's degree plus ten years of experience in marketing and branding.
A proven track record of developing and executing integrated marketing and brand strategies.
5+ years creative strategy experience with depth of people and vendor management experience.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Understanding of the impact racism, discrimination, microaggressions, and systemic oppression has on people from underserved or historically underrepresented groups.
Strong communication, presentation skills, and positive team collaboration is a must.
Understanding of organic & paid social, media and overall strategic 360 planning.
Extensive experience developing creative marketing campaigns. Producing the overarching creative strategy, positioning, and key creative materials while also spearheading campaign management and execution across all platforms.
Experience overseeing the work of an in-house creative team, as well as sourcing vendors, freelancers, and agency partners to bring the campaigns to life.
Adept at working with creative talent and understands how to connect to an audience in unexpected ways to create conversation and drive earned media.
Demonstrated experience with web content management, digital marketing strategies, social media, and a thorough understanding of, and expertise in, SEM, SEO, and content marketing strategy.
Proficiency with web and marketing analytics platforms.
Demonstrated experience in planning, writing and producing marketing plans and materials.
Advertising acumen and expertise in the social media space.
Ability to foster an environment of teamwork and collaboration. Demonstrated skills in managing, motivating and supporting staff of varied talents with proven results in building a high-performing and cohesive marketing team.
Ability to create effective relationships, influence and collaborate internally and externally at all levels, and must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to manage complex projects and to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Understanding and knowledge of marketing principles and industry trends and direction, and a commitment to implementation of higher education industry marketing best practices.
Loyalty to the mission of public education and an understanding of the political parameters involved in working for a public institution is expected.
Ability to prioritize workload according to ROI and manage in a complex environment.
Experience managing budgets.
Experience working in a higher education environment.
