The Associate Director - Marketing & Communications works for the Bernard M. Gordon Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (Gordon-CenSSIS) and its Affiliates, including ALERT (Awareness and Localization of Explosives-Related Threats), a multi-university Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Emeritus Center of Excellence (COE), Engineering PLUS (Partnerships Launching Underrepresented Students), a National Science Foundation (NSF) INCLUDES (Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science) Alliance, and SENTRY (Soft Target Engineering to Neutralize the Threat RealitY), a multi-university DHS COE.
The Associate Director - Marketing & Communications will work closely with the Center Leadership Team to develop, maintain and implement robust marketing and communications strategies for Gordon-CenSSIS and its Affiliates. The person in this role serves as the frontline manager of communication projects to be executed on various communications platforms. These projects include, but are not limited to, the production, printing and distribution of Center reports and proposals; maintenance of an engaging, relevant and active online presence; marketing of center mission, technologies, events and products to stakeholders and the public via newsletters, articles, video and print materials; and assembly and development of presentations, written and visual materials for workshops, conferences and events.
The ideal candidate for this role is familiar with and capable of developing marketing and communications materials for both print and web to a broad and diverse audience, and has a strong ability to summarize complex technical content for the general public in an engaging and accessible way. With respect to the print communications and materials, the role will be responsible for content development, copyediting and review; development of visual elements including graphic design, photography, and illustration; and act as the interface with print vendors as needed. With respect to the web marketing and communications, this position will be responsible for the oversight, creation, and management of video and web media and content to be used to promote and document the Centers' overall web presence including but not limited to, program overviews, major events, activities and offerings conducted by Gordon-CenSSIS/ALERT/E+. This role will lead the development of center video projects from conceptualization to production with the support of the Manager of Events and Operations.
The minimum level of qualifications for success in this job would be a BS degree with 3-5 years of related experience in communications project management including print, digital marketing, video, and reporting materials. This person should have exemplary writing/design/visual communication skills and have a strong grasp of grammatical rules and norms. The incumbent should exhibit a high level of attention to detail and the capacity to understand and consider various target audience needs and viewpoints in the performance of the writing tasks required in a fast-paced environment. This person must be a self-motivated individual who can anticipate problems and demonstrate significant independent judgment. Must have a demonstrated ability to work with a variety of stakeholders at various levels, both internal and external to Northeastern University. Excellent verbal communication skills and demonstrated professional demeanor. Individual must be extremely flexible, patient, adaptable and capable of establishing priorities and timelines.
We are looking for demonstrated experience creating interesting, relatable digital content, and measuring the success of digital content and campaigns on various marketing platforms, which include but are not limited to: social media, e-mail (on desktop and mobile), and websites. Able to motivate, nurture, mentor, and lead other team members to reach their fullest potential. Strong knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop, InDesign, and Premier), web browsers, WordPress, and Constant Contact.
