The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Marketing will be an experienced, cross-functional team leader who develops marketing strategies to achieve organizational goals. With a principal focus on marketing of clinical services, this leader is part of an integrated marketing and communications team responsible for positioning and promoting Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) as both a premier cancer treatment center and a global leader in research discoveries spanning cancer, infectious disease, and basic research.
Fred Hutch recently merged with long-time clinical care partner Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and is in the process of rebranding. This role will be critical in helping articulate the value of the new Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center to health care seekers and existing patients. It will heighten brand differentiation and establish a reputation for excellence among patients, medical providers, healthcare influencers, potential employees and the general public. An important part of that differentiation includes the organization's strong reputation as a world class research center, which gives patients access to the latest treatments and clinical trials.
This role reports to the Chief Marketing & Communications Officer and will oversee a 22-member team. The work schedule accommodates some virtual work but requires ability to come to campus routinely for key meetings and in crisis support situations so should be Seattle area based.
In addition to working in a highly integrated fashion with fellow leaders in the Marketing and Communications Department, this role collaborates closely executive leaders and colleagues in the Director's Office, Strategy, Clinical Operations, Patient Experience, Philanthropy, Government & Community Relations, Human Resources, Business Development, Information Technology, Facilities & Operations, Research Administration and Faculty Affairs.
Develop Fred Hutch's overall clinical marketing strategy and annual service line marketing plans in support of the organization's strategic goals, working closely with the Chief Strategy Officer and with service line leaders. Efforts will focus on digitally driven, metrics-driven marketing strategies that:
Directly elevate consumer awareness, consideration, and choice of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center for cancer treatment.
Continuously strengthen clinical peer recognition of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center as a top research center for cancer and infectious diseases; as a trusted place to refer patients needing the most advanced cancer care; and as a great place to work.
Create the environment for strong philanthropic programs by positioning Fred Hutch as distinct in its ability to deliver the best and latest treatment options, thanks to its strengths in both discovery and clinical care.
Oversee the organization's advertising strategy, which includes brand advertising reflective of our entire organization as well as clinical service line campaigns.
Select and manage external agencies.
Ensure an appropriate media mix across channels such as digital display, SEO/SEM, email, OOH, CTV, print, broadcast and other appropriate advertising channels.
Align marketing spend with organizational priorities and strategic growth objectives of the organization.
Evaluate opportunities including sponsorships and other promotional strategies against our goals and likely return on investment.
Monitor advertising ROI and adjust mix as necessary to achieve value.
In addition to paid strategies, ensure appropriate multi-channel approaches inclusive of earned and owned channel approaches, working in an integrated fashion with the appropriate teams across the Marketing & Communications Department.
Develop reliable methods for monitoring/accessing market intelligence, trends, and technologies to continuously improve efforts. Identify relevant KPI's and methods of measurement to provide meaningful performance reporting.
Conduct relevant research including with consumer and clinical/research peer audiences.
Collect data and insights from internal departments and third-party data sources.
In collaboration with communications, determine best approaches to measuring brand awareness and reputation.
Develop a high performing, high impact marketing function that works in an integrated fashion with other Marketing & Communication teams.
Oversee the central project management team that serves the Marketing & Communications Department.
Evolve marketing and communications workflows, project management processes, and intake to streamline the development and distribution of assets, create efficiencies and support cross-team efficiencies.
Establish and grow a modern marketing technology ecosystem, including CRM capabilities.
As appropriate to our strategic marketing needs, effectively engage appropriate stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, clinical and community partners, and current and prospective faculty, patients and donors through appropriate channels.
Develop and manage an annual communications budget.
Track expenditures, ensuring effective budget and resource utilization.
Work with finance and department peers on budget planning and forecasting.
Develop business cases for resources.
Build, lead, mentor and retain a high performing, well-integrated team that works collaboratively with their colleagues in and outside of the department and reflects our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Ensure robust and consistent use of the organization's brand standards, inclusive of creative style, voice, and attributes.
Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, advertising, business, journalism and/or other relevant fields of study; advanced degree preferred
10+ years of progressive experience in roles that can include marketing, digital strategy, and/or communications, and which must include:
5+ years leading a marketing function and team.
3+ years in a marketing role with a health care organization.
Proven success at building and leading matrixed teams of marketing and communications professionals, including mentoring, coaching, and developing talent.
Record of successfully developing close advisory relationships with organizational leaders.
Experience working with an NCI-designated cancer center, or a nationally ranked cancer treatment and research organization.
Other Experience, Knowledge, Skills
Proven record of accomplishment creating, building and leading a successful marketing function, preferably in healthcare and academic medicine.
Ability to drive innovation within a complex, consensus-minded organization with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated skill at analyzing problems, developing well-informed recommendations, and influencing successful strategic decisions.
Demonstrated skill with innovation in the digital marketing arena, prefer strong expertise with implementation/management of client relationship management systems.
Able to quickly acquire the background needed to make informed decisions in a fluid, rapidly changing but highly regulated environment.
Willingness and ability to respond rapidly to internal customers outside of traditional business hours and across time zones.
Ability to execute plans and initiatives with cross-collaborative teams, including internal/external technology partners and creative teams as well as advertising agencies.
Record of developing effective paid campaigns across a variety of digital and traditional channels that successfully drive consideration and choice.
Experience developing effective content-driven marketing/social media programs; experience using data and analytics to drive insights and decision-making
Skilled at planning, organizing, prioritizing, and executing simultaneous projects and activities at the same time.
